That cartridge — the VitaBead diffuser — is what makes the water alkaline and is the only reason to buy DYLN rather than any other $30 bottle. It is also a consumable with a three-month life. What the VitaBeads are and what they claim to do
DYLN describes the VitaBeads as a proprietary blend of magnesium, tourmaline, zinc and silica, heated to over 700 °C to form the beads, held in a cartridge that sits in the bottom of the bottle. The brand’s claims for what they do to tap water are threefold: raise pH to around 9 (it says the water “will level at around a pH of 9” and typically passes pH 8 within 10–20 minutes, though hard or unusual source water may not reach 9); lower the oxidation-reduction potential to about −150 mV, which it calls “antioxidant”; and enrich the water with dissolved hydrogen, which is the magnesium reacting with water.
Two limits the FAQ states plainly and buyers often miss: the diffuser does not filter water, so it does nothing about chlorine, lead or taste in the way a filter bottle would; and it is not suitable for hot drinks, because heat can damage the beads and the bottle. Whether alkaline or hydrogen water has health benefits is a separate question we do not settle here; this article is about the hardware.
How long it lasts and how to tell it is spent
The brand’s figure is three months of average daily use, or 300 litres (80 gallons), whichever comes first. There is no indicator on the cartridge. Signs owners use: the water stops tasting noticeably “smoother” than tap, or a pH test strip no longer reads above 8 after 20 minutes. DYLN offers two reminders — register the bottle for emails when a replacement is due, or take the diffuser subscription, which ships on a 1-, 2- or 3-month cadence and knocks 20% off.

For a single user the calendar rule dominates, which means the diffuser expires whether or not you drink much. That is worth knowing if you use the bottle only at the gym: you are still on a $50–100-a-year clock.
How to replace it
Each bottle ships with a three-part Diffuser Removal Tool (sold separately for $14.99 if you lose it). The FAQ’s procedure is short: use the tool to unscrew and lift out the old diffuser, drop in the new one and seat it with the same tool. Rinse the new cartridge under cold water first. If the bottle has been in a bag with a spent diffuser for weeks, give the base a wash before fitting the new one — residue from the old beads sits in the recess.
Cleaning without killing the beads
- Bottle and cap: remove the diffuser first, then wash with warm soapy water (the brand prefers a plant-based soap) or put them in the dishwasher. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Diffuser: handwash in warm water only — no soap, no dishwasher. Air-dry before refitting.
- Storage: cool, dry place; the FAQ repeats that the diffuser should still be replaced “every few months” regardless of how clean it looks.
- Gasket: the silicone gasket is a $4.99 part that fits every bottle size; replace it if the lid starts to weep.

The gap between the worst and best way to buy the same part is $50 a year — more than the bottle itself costs over two years.
