A suit or a dress is the hardest thing to pack in a carry-on: it needs to hang, it creases where it folds, and the overhead bin is not kind to it. The good news is that you do not need a special bag to arrive looking sharp — just the right fold and a few minutes at the hotel. This guide covers three methods, from best to most compact, plus how to handle long dresses and what to do on arrival. If you want a bag designed for it, our best carry-on garment bags compares the options.

The short answer

The best way to pack a suit in a carry-on is to hang it in a garment bag or garment duffel with a single soft fold, protected by a dry cleaner’s plastic bag; the next best is the inside-out shoulder fold in a regular suitcase, with the jacket on top of everything else. Unpack and hang it as soon as you arrive, and let shower steam remove what creases remain.

What you need

  • A garment bag or garment duffel, or a carry-on suitcase with a flat top layer of space.
  • A sturdy hanger (if you are hanging the suit).
  • A dry cleaner’s plastic bag or tissue paper.
  • A rolled T-shirt or sweater to soften the fold.

Method 1: Hang it in a garment bag or garment duffel (fewest wrinkles)

  1. Hang the suit together. Button the jacket’s top button and hang it on the hanger; fold the trousers along their creases over the hanger bar.
  2. Cover it. Slide a dry cleaner’s plastic bag over the suit. The plastic reduces friction, so the fabric slides at the fold instead of creasing.
  3. Hang it in the garment section and fasten the strap or hook so it cannot slide down.
  4. Soften the fold. Lay a rolled T-shirt across the fold line before you close the bag, so the suit bends around a curve rather than a sharp edge.
  5. Keep shoes separate. Pack shoes in the shoe compartment or a shoe bag, away from the suit.

Garment duffels make this easy in a single carry-on: the JenniBag Travel Bag 2.0 hangs up to 10 pieces and folds them around a duffel compartment, and Halfday’s Garment Duffel 45L fits a suit up to size 50R. Our travel garment bags for suits guide compares more options.

Method 2: The inside-out shoulder fold (any carry-on)

  1. Turn one shoulder inside out. Hold the jacket facing you and push the left shoulder inside out.
  2. Tuck the other shoulder into it. Fit the right shoulder into the inverted left one, so the lining faces out and the outer fabric is protected.
  3. Fold in half lengthwise and smooth the sleeves inside.
  4. Fold once across the middle, or roll loosely if the jacket is unstructured.
  5. Pack it last, on top. Fold the trousers along their creases and lay them flat underneath the jacket, then put nothing heavy on top.

Method 3: Roll it (most compact, casual suits only)

For unstructured jackets, knit blazers and trousers, rolling saves space. Do the shoulder fold first, then roll the jacket loosely from the collar down. Do not roll a structured jacket with firm shoulders or a canvassed chest — rolling can crush the shoulders and lapels.

Tip: Wool suits recover from light creases overnight on a hanger; linen and cotton suits wrinkle much more. If you are choosing what to wear for a trip, pick wool or a wool blend.

How to pack a dress

  • Knee- and midi-length dresses: hang in a garment bag or garment duffel the same way as a suit, with plastic over the dress.
  • Full-length gowns: need a bag long enough to avoid a second fold. Halfday says its 45-liter Garment Duffel fits most standard-length dresses and its Carry-On Garment Roller has an open-bottom section for full-length dresses; the longest gowns may need a long garment bag that is checked.
  • Knits and jersey: roll them; they rarely crease.
  • Silk and satin: fold over tissue paper and pack on top, away from zippers.

Our garment bags for dresses guide lists bags by the dress length they fit.

At the airport and on the plane

  • Count it as your carry-on. On most US airlines a garment bag is your one carry-on; American allows soft-sided garment bags up to 51 inches in total dimensions, and Southwest lists a garment bag as an example of a carry-on.
  • Do not expect a closet. JetBlue says its planes have no closets for hanging garment bags, so pack the suit to travel folded in the bin.
  • Lay it flat in the bin and ask that nothing heavy go on top.

When you arrive

  1. Unpack the suit or dress first and hang it immediately.
  2. Run a hot shower with the bathroom door closed and hang the clothes nearby for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Use a travel steamer for stubborn creases; with an iron, put a cloth between the iron and wool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pack a suit in a carry-on without wrinkles?

Hang it if you can: put the jacket and trousers on one hanger, cover them with a dry cleaner’s plastic bag and zip them into a garment bag or garment duffel with a single soft fold. In a regular carry-on, turn the jacket’s shoulders inside out, fold it in half lengthwise, and lay it on top of everything else.

Can I hang my suit in a closet on the plane?

Do not count on it. JetBlue says its planes have no closets for hanging garment bags, and on most flights your garment bag goes in the overhead bin like any other carry-on. Pack the suit so it can travel folded.

Is it better to roll or fold a suit jacket?

Fold a structured jacket using the inside-out shoulder method, because rolling can crush the shoulder pads and lapels. Rolling works for unstructured or knit jackets and for trousers. Either way, keep the jacket on top so nothing heavy sits on it.

How do I pack a long dress in a carry-on?

Use a garment bag long enough for the dress, or fold it once over a padded hanger with tissue or plastic at the fold. Halfday says its 45-liter Garment Duffel fits most standard-length dresses; full-length gowns usually need a longer garment bag or an open-bottom roller.

How do I get wrinkles out of a suit at the hotel?

Hang it as soon as you arrive, then let the steam from a hot shower relax the fabric for 15 to 20 minutes, or use a travel steamer. Avoid pressing wool directly with a hot iron; use a cloth between them.

Does a garment bag count as a carry-on?

Yes, on most US airlines a garment bag counts as your carry-on. American allows soft-sided garment bags up to 51 total inches, and Southwest lists a garment bag as an example of a carry-on bag.

The bottom line

Hang it if you can, fold it inside out if you cannot, and roll only what has no structure. Add a plastic bag at the fold, keep shoes away from the suit, and hang everything as soon as you arrive. With those habits, any carry-on can deliver a suit or dress ready to wear — and a garment duffel makes it easier.
